Gravel Driveway Cost: Installed Price vs. Delivered Gravel

What an installed gravel driveway costs per square foot, what the gravel itself costs delivered, and how depth and truckloads move the total.

WHAT SHOULD YOU BUDGET?

Separate the gravel bill from the installed driveway price.

A basic installed gravel driveway costs $1 to $4 per square foot in published 2025–2026 cost guides and contractor prices: $480 to $1,920 for a 12 × 40 ft driveway. The gravel is the smaller part. At the FHWA gravel roads guide’s lightest suggested thickness, 4.5 inches, that driveway takes 9.45 tons, and one Ohio yard delivers 10 tons of crusher run for $375.00.

A top-up, a failed layer and a new driveway on bare ground are different jobs. Price the gravel with the gravel driveway calculator, check the pile sizes for 1 to 10 tons so you know where the truck can dump, then use the installed figures below to check what a contractor’s quote adds.

How much does it cost to install a gravel driveway?

Published 2025–2026 figures for a basic, professionally installed gravel driveway run from $1 to $4 per square foot across 4 sources. HomeGuide prices a full layered build with grading at $4 to $10 per square foot. The gap between the low and high figures is site preparation, depth and labor, not the gravel.

How much does a gravel driveway cost by length?

At 12 ft wide and the same $1–$4 per square foot, a 100 ft driveway costs $1,200 to $4,800 installed and a quarter-mile lane $15,840 to $63,360. The per-square-foot figures come from typical residential jobs, so get a quote for the whole length on a long lane.

How depth changes the gravel bill

Depth decides how many tons, and tons decide how many truckloads. Table 3 of the FHWA gravel roads guide suggests 4.5 to 6.5 inches of gravel for a road with up to five heavy trucks a day, depending on how firm the ground is. On a 12 × 40 ft driveway at 105 lb/ft³, priced on Colson’s Gravel’s delivered list for B-19 3/4 inch crusher run:

SubgradeDepthGravelOrderDelivered
Low support6.5 in13.65 t14 t, 2 loads$600.00
Medium support5.5 in11.55 t12 t, 2 loads$550.00
High support4.5 in9.45 t10 t, 1 load$375.00

Going from 4.5 to 6.5 inches adds 4.2 tons and a second truckload, and the delivered bill rises from $375.00 to $600.00. Compacted depths need extra loose gravel on top of this; the driveway calculator shows the allowance. Per-ton list prices for other materials are on the gravel prices page (17 suppliers).

Why delivery changes the cost per ton

A truck costs about the same to send half empty, so small orders pay more per ton. On Colson’s Gravel’s list, charted below, 1 ton of crusher run delivered costs $165.00; 10 tons cost $375.00, or $37.50 a ton. Loads are capped at 10 tons, so 12 tons is two trips and the price per ton climbs back to $45.83.

Delivered price per ton at Colson’s Gravel, Morrow, OH: crusher run falls from $165.00 for 1 ton to $37.50 for 10 tons, then rises to $45.83 at 12 tons, which needs a second load.

Other yards structure delivery differently. R.J. Grondin in Maine lists Zone 1 delivery at $100 for 1–3 cubic yards and $10 a yard or $9 a ton from 7 yards up (source). Main’s Landscape Supply in Michigan charges each time a truck leaves its yard (source, page 4). Truck sizes, minimum orders and short-load fees are compared in the dump truck load guide.

Compare driveway quotes on the same scope

A low gravel price and a complete installed quote are not comparable totals. Ask each contractor or supplier to price the same quantities and say what is included.

Main’s recommends having material delivered the day before the crew needs it (source, page 4). Keep the delivery ticket: it records the tons actually delivered.

Gravel driveway cost questions

Can I use a price per square foot?

Only for the same scope. Installed prices of $1 to $4 per square foot include labor and site work; the gravel alone is far less. For 12 × 40 ft at 4.5 inches, 10 tons of crusher run delivered for $375 is $0.78 per square foot. Divide any quote by the area it actually covers.
